15 septembre 1808 : naissance à Edimbourg de John Hutton Balfour, botaniste écossais, mort le 11 février 1884 à Inverleith House dans la même ville.  Il obtint un doctorat de médecine en 1831 et exerça à Edimbourg, jusqu’à l’obtention en 1841 de la chaire royale de botanique à l’université de Glasgow puis à celle d’Édimbourg en 1845.

Il fut nommé, la même année, directeur du remarquable Jardin botanique royal de la ville. John Frederick Jeffrey (1866-1943) a nommé Pinus balfouriana, un pin de Californie (Pinaceae) qui lui rend hommage. Balf. est l’abréviation botanique officielle de John Hutton Balfour.

Parmi ses plus célèbres publications : Class book of botany (1852), Outlines of botany (1854), The plants of the Bible (1866), Elements of botany for schools (1869), Introduction to the study of palaeontological botany (1872), A manual of botany (cinq volumes, 1875), Botany and religion (volumes, 1882)
